New Community of Clarence Road Signs
Introducing Our New Community of Clarence Road Signs!
Drive by and say hello to our vibrant community! We're thrilled to unveil our brand new road signs welcoming you to the Community of Clarence - Just North of Paradise - Est. 1760! We hope these signs will make their debut this summer (2024) on the East and West ends of the Clarence Road (Near Mount Hanley, and Hampton Mountain Roads, as well as Elliot Road)
Our established date refers to the first known record of land being given to colonial settlers, from a map (1760) held in the collections of the Nova Scotia Archives. However, we acknowledge the presence of people prior to this date.
Initially known as the 'Back Settlement,' the community's name evolved through a meeting in the mid-19th century, choosing Clarence to honor of the Duke of Clarence and St. Andrews, later King William IV, after his brother, Edward, Duke of Kent, showed great interest in the region and spent time in the settlement in 1794.
Keep an eye out for our iconic landmarks, the historic North Mountain Meeting House (1853) and the charming Clarence East School (1891), showcased on our signs. They stand as testaments to our enduring community spirit, growth, and commitment to preserving our heritage.
Come on over and experience the warmth and charm of the Community of Clarence! Whether you're a visitor passing through or a neighbor stopping by, you're always welcome here. Let's make memories together in our little slice of paradise!
