About Us…
Situated in the picturesque Annapolis Valley just ‘North of Paradise’, the Community of Clarence boasts a rich history that dates back centuries. The land, originally utilized by the Mi'kmaq'ki people, later witnessed Acadian settlements in the 1600s, evident through discovered artifacts and foundations on local farms.
The region played a pivotal role in the Wilmot Township, hosting the first land grants, to distinguished British Settlers, in what is now Central Clarence. Initially known as the 'Back Settlement,' the community's name evolved through a meeting in the mid-19th century, choosing Clarence to honor of the Duke of Clarence and St. Andrews, later King William IV, after his brother, Edward, Duke of Kent, showed great interest in the region and spent time in the settlement in 1794.
Among the original founding families, including the Banks, Elliott, Farnsworth, Foster, Jackson, Marshall Family’s, who’s descendants still are active in the community. We take pride in our community's blend of both historic and contemporary families, fostering a vibrant tapestry of heritage and progress.
Today, the Community of Clarence encompasses Clarence East (Upper Clarence), Clarence, Central Clarence, and Clarence West (Lower Clarence). The boundaries of the Community are outlined by the Municipal Polling District ‘Clarence’ for District 3 in the Municipality of the County of Annapolis.
